characterinformation;
name: koga oogami.
canon: ensemble stars!
canon point: autumn, post blood banquet.
age: seventeen.
history: his wikipedia entry, his list of appearances organized by seasons.
personality: self-proclaimed lone wolf, an independent boy with great confidence who refuses to rely on others, but equally, somehow, still loves being depended on. koga oogami is a normal seventeen years old human, despite often regarding to humankind in third person, as though he's not part of them. to top it all, he's an idol as well — which means there's no way he cannot not rely on others, when his unit UNDEAD has three other members.
at face value, koga oogami looks far too much like a delinquent. sharp gaze and even sharper tongue, torn shirts, extremely thin patience. he scares off the meek and cowardly with his constant yelling, rough speech, and threats that are spilled out too casually ("i'll kill you", "i'll bite you to death", etc). true to his last name, a pun on "wolf god", koga will even growl and jump at people exactly like a threatened, feral dog. everyone who talks to him is met with the same name-calling ("you bastard"), and it'd be too easy to believe this untamed dog has no respect for anyone or anything, only caring about himself and his own interests, always thinking of himself as the best (going as far as adding the honorific "-sama" to his personal pronoun "ore"). while this couldn't be farthest from the truth, it takes some very slow development for koga to show his true colors.
those who speak to koga and know him often say the same thing: koga oogami is not honest with his feelings. don't get me wrong, the "tsundere" trope doesn't quite apply here, no. he continues to be a lone wolf through and through, but wolves also have pack mentalities. he refuses to make friends, constantly telling other people that we aren't friends, don't get friendly with me!, but later down the road, during summer, he is even called out on this — subaru akehoshi says that koga has a kind heart, and that he barely says those kind of things anymore. this must mean gami-san considers us friends! ... to which, of course, infuriates koga and he immediately says that no, they're wrong — but no, they're right. even later during autumn, rei sakuma brings up that koga is a "child who values those who were able to gain his trust", and that he "doesn't realize it himself, but he lets his guard down around akehoshi-kun and (makoto) yuuki-kun / the evidence of that is that he seems to be having fun when he speaks of them, after all."
once this lone, proud wolf considers one a friend, he will go to extreme lengths for them, just not as transparently as one would wish. he is never direct in the words he says to others when he shows genuine care, but if you pay attention, you'll see him roughly telling you to stop being an idiot and take care of yourself, to eat your meat and vegetables, to not use your phone before bed time, to keep your health in check. he'll use the excuse that whoever he's speaking with is an idol (or their producer, if it's towards the player character, anzu), that they should take care of their body and health, otherwise how are they going to perform at all?! but even those excuses just sound like he's genuinely worrying for them, because he is.
likewise, despite his general delinquent appearance, koga surprises many with his good manners. he can be often found scolding others for intruding in people's personal space, or going through their things (telling adonis to never do something to people that he wouldn't like if they did to him), or even not relying on their friends, despite how koga doesn't rely on anyone at all. he has a good head on his shoulders, and that becomes even more evident when he is around his unitmates. he might be the second youngest, but he guides and helps the clueless adonis otogari, scolds the irresponsibleand horny kaoru hakaze, and doesn't put up with the fake-vampire rei sakuma's bullshit. he's always eager to push UNDEAD to the top, to hold his unitmates to their commitment to their unit, because for all that koga is, he is also incredibly passionate about rock, and music.
really, when it comes down to it, koga is a boy of simple tastes. he is diligent to his unit's lessons, always being on time, always pissed off when they can't train, and always training on his own if he has the time to spare. and as mentioned in the beginning, he's an independent boy who's also part of a four-man unit... but it doesn't stop him. for most of the story, he hints that he doesn't care whether one or two of their members leave UNDEAD; as long as he is there, he will make UNDEAD thrive (which, in part, is ironic, because he is also the one who named their unit). thankfully, however, it is by late autumn, early spring that he learns that UNDEAD is only what it is if all four of them are together (which also sucks, because spring is time for graduation).
(let's not talk about his insane love for dogs, and how all his delinquent-like behavior falls flat around them. others mention how koga is soft with them, and the pure smiles he flashes them — which rei notes that, if koga showed that side of him during their lives, he'd be an idol who wins the hearts of all. his love for them is genuine and true, which stops him from pampering his dog — or any — more than necessary. he'll scold others if their dog isn't in perfect shape — like when he scolded subaru for feeding daikichi too many treats —, or if they don't treat their dogs with the utmost care. being a dog owner is real business, ok!)
all in all, koga oogami is the embodiment of "don't judge a book by its cover". though aggressive and quick to snap at others, he is a boy with a heart of gold, who cares deeply about those who win his trust. besides, he's also incredibly loved by dogs, and like he himself said, "there's no way someone who likes dogs can be a bad person".
abilities & skills: koga is thankfully mostly human, but he does seem to have a sharper sense of smell than normal people.
inventory/companions:
choice: vampire.
reason: despite being a self-proclaimed wolf, i want tomake koga suffer give him a challenge. his unitmate rei is a self-proclaimed vampire, and he's really against this persona he assumed for himself, always calling him 'that damn vampire', etc. he's also someone who is utterly independent, and being a vampire will force him to depend on people (for feeding, warmth, even being allowed into places). it goes completely against everything he stands for, which would be fun to play out!
