( though the conditions less than ideal, rei had signed up to entertain largely for an excuse to survey outside the walls while under comfortable supervision. entertainment and the healing of ailing hearts was something second nature to him for perhaps obvious reasons, and once there he could gauge how significant the threat that he—and those who'd come with him from home—were exactly facing.
however, as happens, there'd been a mix-up in the paperwork, and they had sent him off as a bare-handed fighter. they didn't do much to inform him of this as they'd shuffled him off with a number of other participants further into the outer city, and by the time there was chance to grow privy to the issue, they were too deep into the thick of things to escort him back, and he'd gotten separated from the rest.
he hears a sharp sound from elsewhere— and the vague sound of someone certainly human, likely sane; there was a quality to the voice that wasn't so rough and strained the way those feral humans and monsters were, from whom rei had scrambled (and not very well) from when they'd erred too close. though he'd be a burden, he'd also rather he didn't die here (the irony)— he had people to look after in the city, and death did not seem so appealing once it stared at you directly with its whitened eyes.
he turns his head around a corner from the alley he'd been skulking in, warily checking if, firstly, this was indeed someone human here, and, secondly, if they weren't in the middle of fighting a thing. rei's head is visible from where he peeks out, but he doesn't think it wise to jump into the fray if the situation is a little tense and there's nothing he can exactly do. )
